Physicochemical, microbiological characterization and phytotoxicity of digestates produced on single-stage and two-stage anaerobic digestion of food waste

Abstract Organic amendments favor the development of sustainable agriculture by using less chemical fertilizers. In this way, use digestates from anaerobic digestion as soil conditioners in has been gaining interest due to their important N and P nutrient contents, among others. This study evaluated potential reactors treating food waste single (D1) two-stages (D2: hydrolytic/acidogenic D3: acetogenic/methanogenic) configurations. Digestate characteristics application conditions (100, 50, 25, 5%) were Raphanus sativus an indicator species. D3 reported best performance terms of: (i) better physicochemical, microbiological, parasitological characteristics, being a class B material, without exceeding established limits for heavy metals, fecal coliforms (FC < 1000 CFU 100 mL ? 1 ), Salmonella spp. (0 g viable helminth eggs HE ); (ii) stability indicators on D3, followed D1 (volatile solids/total solids (VS/TS): 0.57 0.65, pH: 8.63 6.80, respectively), while D2 was most unstable digestate (VS/TS > 0.87 acidic pH); (iii) greater agricultural use, since 5% dose produced germination index 120%, whose effect is associated with presence humic fulvic acids concentrations 1%. addition, that volatile fatty 2500 mg L act antimicrobial agents, reducing required pathogen removal pretreatments.

Anaerobic digestion of food waste was conducted at high OLR from 3.7 to 12.9 kg-VS m(-3) day(-1) for 225 days. Periods without organic loading were arranged between the each loading period.
